    (FAQ) Understanding the NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government initiative designed to support individuals with permanent and significant disabilities. The NDIS provides funding for a range of services and supports that are tailored to the unique needs of each participant. These supports are aimed at helping individuals achieve their goals, improve their quality of life, and increase their independence. The NDIS covers various aspects, including assistance with daily activities, transport, social participation, employment, and more. It operates on a participant-centered approach, where each person receives a personalized plan based on their specific needs and goals.

The NDIS operates by creating a personalized funding plan for each eligible participant. This plan is based on an assessment of the participant’s needs and goals. The NDIS provides funding for a range of supports and services, which participants can access to enhance their daily living and achieve their objectives.

Arete Care offers a variety of services under the NDIS, all designed to support participants in their daily lives and help them achieve their goals. These services include:

    • Assistance with Daily Life Tasks: Support in group or shared living arrangements, helping with personal care, meal preparation, and household chores.
    • Travel and Transport Arrangements: Assistance in organizing transport for appointments, community activities, and other necessary travel.
    • Daily Personal Activities: Support with personal tasks to maintain independence and quality of life.
    • Household Tasks: Help with household maintenance, including cleaning and gardening.
    • Community and Social Participation: Encouragement and support to engage in community and social activities.
    • Life Stage Transitions: Assistance with managing significant life changes, such as moving homes or starting a new job.
    • Community Nursing Care for High Needs: Specialized nursing care for participants with complex health needs.
    • Development of Daily Living and Life Skills: Programs to help develop essential life skills for greater independence.
    • Plan Management: Assistance in managing NDIS plans to ensure funds are used effectively and participants can access necessary services.

Eligibility for the NDIS is determined based on specific criteria, including the nature and permanence of the disability. Individuals must have a significant disability that affects their ability to participate in everyday activities. An assessment is conducted to determine eligibility and the level of support required.

Applying for the NDIS involves several steps:

    1. Check Your Eligibility: Before applying, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria, including age (under 65 when first applying), residency (Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Special Category Visa holder), and having a permanent and significant disability that impacts your daily life.

    2. Gather Supporting Documents: You’ll need to provide evidence of your disability, including medical reports and assessments that demonstrate how your condition affects your daily activities.

    3. Submit an Access Request Form: You can apply for the NDIS by submitting an Access Request Form. This form can be obtained by calling the NDIS on 1800 800 110 or downloading it from the NDIS website.

    4. Complete the Access Request Form: Fill out the form with your personal details and attach the required supporting documents. You may need your doctor or healthcare professional to complete part of the form to confirm your disability.

    5. Submit the Form: Once completed, submit the form to the NDIS. This can be done online, by mail, or in person at an NDIS office.

    6. NDIS Assessment: After submitting your application, the NDIS will review your information and may contact you for additional details or an assessment to better understand your needs.

    7. Receive a Decision: If your application is successful, you’ll be contacted by the NDIS to discuss your next steps, including creating a personalized plan. If your application is not approved, you will receive information on how to request a review of the decision.

    8. Develop Your NDIS Plan: If approved, you’ll work with an NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to develop a plan that outlines your goals and the supports you need to achieve them.

Arete Care can assist you throughout this process, from understanding the eligibility requirements to preparing and submitting your application. We are here to help ensure you receive the support you need to access the NDIS and create a plan that aligns with your goals and needs.

The NDIS funds a wide range of supports to help participants achieve their goals and improve their daily lives. These supports are tailored to each individual’s needs and can include:

    1. Core Supports:

      • Assistance with Daily Living: Support with personal activities like dressing, grooming, and meal preparation.
      • Transport: Funding for transport to help participants travel to work, school, or community activities.
      • Consumables: Essential items such as continence products or assistive technology like wheelchair accessories.
      • Assistance with Social and Community Participation: Support to engage in social, recreational, or community activities.
    2. Capacity Building Supports:

      • Support Coordination: Assistance in managing your NDIS plan and connecting with service providers.
      • Improved Living Arrangements: Help with finding and maintaining suitable accommodation.
      • Increased Social and Community Participation: Programs to develop skills for participating in social or community activities.
      • Finding and Keeping a Job: Support with finding employment, including job coaching and workplace modifications.
      • Improved Relationships: Support for developing positive behaviors and social skills.
      • Improved Health and Wellbeing: Services like dietetics, exercise physiology, or personal training.
      • Improved Daily Living Skills: Training to increase independence in daily tasks such as cooking, budgeting, or personal care.
      • Improved Life Choices: Financial management of your NDIS plan (plan management).
      • Improved Learning: Assistance with education and training.
      • Improved Communication: Supports such as speech therapy to improve communication skills.
    3. Capital Supports:

      • Assistive Technology: Equipment and technology that enhance independence, such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, or communication devices.
      • Home Modifications: Structural changes to your home to make it more accessible, like ramps or bathroom modifications.
      • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA): Funding for accommodation designed for people with very high support needs.

The NDIS is designed to be flexible, and the specific supports funded for each participant are determined by their individual plan, which is created based on their unique needs and goals. Arete Care can assist you in accessing and managing these supports to ensure they align with your personal circumstances and help you live a fulfilling life.

Finding an NDIS provider that suits your needs is an important step in accessing the supports outlined in your NDIS plan. Here’s how you can find an NDIS provider:

    1. Use the NDIS Provider Finder Tool:

      • The NDIS website offers a Provider Finder Tool that allows you to search for registered NDIS providers in your area. You can filter providers based on the type of service you need, such as personal care, therapy, or community participation.
    2. Contact Your Local Area Coordinator (LAC):

      • Your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) can assist you in finding and connecting with suitable NDIS providers. They have knowledge of local services and can offer recommendations based on your specific needs and goals.
    3. Ask for Recommendations:

      • Speak with other NDIS participants, family members, or support workers for recommendations on providers they trust and have had positive experiences with. Personal referrals can be a valuable resource.
    4. Check Online Reviews and Testimonials:

      • Look for online reviews or testimonials from other participants who have used the services of potential providers. This can give you insight into the quality of care and support the provider offers.
    5. Contact Providers Directly:

      • Once you have a list of potential providers, contact them directly to ask questions about their services, availability, and how they can meet your needs. This is also a good opportunity to assess their customer service and responsiveness.
    6. Visit Providers in Person:

      • If possible, visit the provider’s facilities or arrange a meeting with them to discuss your requirements. This can help you get a better feel for the provider and determine if they are the right fit for you.
    7. Use NDIS Plan Management Services:

      • If you have chosen to use a Plan Manager, they can also assist in finding and coordinating services with NDIS providers. Plan Managers have experience working with various providers and can help streamline the process for you.
    8. Consult Arete Care:

      • As an experienced NDIS provider, Arete Care can guide you through the process of finding the right supports and services. We offer a range of services tailored to your needs and can connect you with other providers if necessary.

Choosing the right NDIS provider is crucial to ensuring you receive the support you need to live independently and achieve your goals. Take your time to research and select a provider that best aligns with your preferences and plan requirements.
